Trench Road Nursery School, Derry

About Us

Trench Road Nursery School opened in 1980 and the school provides for 52, 3-4 year old children.  A broad and balanced curriculum caters for the needs of all individual pupils, including those with special needs (who are integrated into the life of the school very successfully). Parents play a vital role in the community of this school.  Excellent communication links are established both prior to a child’s enrolment and throughout their time as a pupil.  This is maintained through daily informal contact with parents, through planned parent / teacher consultations, by involving parents directly in the curriculum provision i.e. through sharing practical activities within the classroom.  Parents are also asked to complete audits and questionnaires in order for staff to review current provision.

Trench Road Nursery School actively develops links with local, national and international charities which are supported by school based and family supported fund-raisers.

Trench Road Nursery School has maintained very strong links with the local primary school (formerly Trench Road Primary School, now known as Sacred Heart Primary School).  A well established pupil transition programme operates successfully.  (Staff from both schools visit each others school and transferring pupils are taken on various visits throughout the year).  Important pupil and curriculum information is shared.  (See Transition Policy). Close links have been developed  with various local primary schools and local Family Centre through Extended School Clustering.

It is the intention of the school to provide experiences, which stimulate, challenge and support learning appropriate to the abilities and needs of each child.  Opportunities are also provided within the school by a flexible, developing, and learning environment, organised by the professional staff.

The school aims to build upon the leaning experiences, which have already taken place in the home.  Teachers plan, organise and structure the curriculum, which is based upon the practical activities and interests of the individual child.  This curriculum lays the foundation for the work continued in primary education.

We in Trench Road Nursery school aim to provide a rich stimulating and varied learning environment and a positive educational experience for all.  We believe the best way to do this is in partnership with parents. Parents have commented on the ‘active working partnership between Parents and staff ’, and also the warm caring atmosphere within the school.

The ethos of the school incorporates a sense of calm and serenity which creates a sense of security for pupils. All pupils are valued and respected.
